Dennis C. Daley, PhD, LCSW, is Professor of Psychiatry and Chief of Addiction Medicine Services (AMS) at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. A board-certified diplomate in clinical social work, he is also Associate Professor of Social Work and was previously the Director of Family Studies and Social Work at WPIC. Dr. Daley has been involved in providing clinical services, program development and management for over 30 years. He currently oversees AMS, which has more than 20 treatment programs serving over 8,000 patients each year, several prevention programs, and numerous research studies funded by NIDA and NIAAA.

With a strong interest in training and dissemination, Dr. Daley has presented over 400 workshops, seminars and lectures throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, many of them on co-occurring disorders, and has consulted with treatment programs internationally. In addition, he has served as Co-Director of the Education Core for the VISN 4 Veteran Administration’s Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Care (MIRECC) project, a joint effort between the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh VA Medical Centers focusing on co-occurring disorders. 

Dr. Daley has been an investigator on numerous research studies sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) related to treatment of individuals with substance use or co-occurring disorders. He is the Principal Investigator of the Appalachian Tri-State Node of NIDA’s Clinical Trials Network project and is currently involved in studies of the treatment of prescription opioid addiction, the treatment of adolescents with attention deficit and substance use disorders, a twelve-step facilitation intervention for individuals with stimulant use disorders, and HIV rapid testing strategies.

Dr. Daley has over 260 publications including books and clinical manuals, recovery guides and workbooks for clients and families, journal articles and educational films on addiction, co-occurring disorders, recovery, relapse prevention, and family issues.

He is also author of many patient interactive workbooks and journals on recovery from substance use disorders, psychiatric illness, co-occurring disorders and specific combinations of disorders such as mood, anxiety, personality and psychotic disorders combined with addiction. He has also written materials on anger, emotions, grief, gratitude, family recovery and relapse. Several of his publications were written specifically for children or adolescents. He was one of the first in the U.S. to write interactive recovery workbooks on addiction and the first to write workbooks on recovery from co-occurring disorders.

Dr. Daley has also written over 35 educational videos for patients and families including 19 videos in the Living Sober I, II and III series,11 videos in the Promise of Recovery series on psychiatric illness, Double Trouble: Personality Disorders and Addiction, Double Trouble: Mood and Anxiety Disorders and Addiction, and videos on relapse, family issues and anger management. His practical recovery materials are used in many treatment programs in the U.S. and other countries, and several of his books have been translated into foreign languages.
