Description:
Youth Space, a project of Pediatric AIDS/HIV Care, Inc. (PAHC), is a summer day camp designed specifically for urban minority youth affected and/or infected with HIV/AIDS in metropolitan Washington, DC.  The goal of this innovative programming is to provide the life, decision-making, and communication skills needed for improved social competence and satisfaction in anticipation of purposeful and meaningful adult lives.

PAHC’s purpose is to preserve, assist, and strengthen the well-being of HIV/AIDS infected and affected children and young adults through a range of therapeutic, educational, culturally enriching services including but not limited to social and recreational activities; experience based learning, mentoring and tutoring support, job readiness programming and community service activities.  Youth Space is an extension of our established program and is based in our year-round facility, The Wright House.

The primary components of the camp consist of psycho-educational, learning modules with experiential activities, retreats, and outings for application and practice.  Individualized life coaching sessions provide opportunities to develop and customize plans for achieving personal goals and envision their futures.  Through participation in community service activities it is our aim to teach the youth about the challenges of citizenship and the importance of giving back to our community.  Recreational pastimes will round out their time together as they cultivate a peer community.  The camp is intended as a model of service provision with a curriculum guide for dissemination.
