In 1988, Congress passed the Abandoned Infants
Assistance Act. This legislation provides funding to support
the National AIA Resource Center and direct
service projects for children who are abandoned or at-risk
of abandonment due to HIV and substance abuse, and their families.
Subsequently, this legislation was reauthorized by PL 102-236
in 1991 and PL 104-235 in 1996.
On June 25, 2003, the Keeping Children and Families Safe
Act of 2003 was signed by the President and became Public
Law No: 108-36. This law reauthorized AIA, along with other
programs, through fiscal year 2008.
Approximately, $12,000,000 was appropriated for the AIA program
for the 2004 fiscal year.
