About AIA : Legislation

In 1988, Congress passed the Abandoned Infants Assistance Act. This legislation provides funding to support the National AIA Resource Center and direct service projects for children who are abandoned or at-risk of abandonment due to HIV and substance abuse, and their families.

Subsequently, this legislation was reauthorized by PL 102-236 in 1991 and PL 104-235 in 1996.

On June 25, 2003, the Keeping Children and Families Safe Act of 2003 was signed by the President and became Public Law No: 108-36. This law reauthorized AIA, along with other programs, through fiscal year 2008.

Approximately, $12,000,000 was appropriated for the AIA program for the 2004 fiscal year.
